Impressionism and Fashion, is the name of a wonderful exhibition being staged at the Musée d’Orsay until 20th January. Whether you are a lover of fashion or art, the paintings, dresses and accessories brought together for the exhibition are well worth a detour.
Impressionism and Fashion: a historical testimony
In addition to their landscapes, the impressionists are especially known for painting men and women, and depicting in the process the daily life of their contemporaries. Their paintings thereby provide an accurate and valuable insight into the way of dressing, the trends and fashions of that time. Impressionism and Fashion is the first exhibition devoted to this fascinating theme.
Thanks to the paintings on display, including "the Young Lady" by Manet and "Madame Charpentier and her Children" by Renoir, visitors are invited to plunge into the heart of society at the end of the 19th century. The growing differentiation between male and female styles, the advent of accessories, the appearance of walking outfits and the golden era for crinoline dresses are highlighted through the works, displayed next to sumptuous dresses, engravings, photos and fashion journals.
