Current exhibitions in Paris, presenting the Alice Alleaume collection
The Novel of a Wardrobe presents to the general public for the first time the amazing clothing collection gathered by Alice Alleaume and recently donated to the city. Alice (1881 to 1969) was the daughter of a seamstress and consequently gained exposure to the world of fashion from an early age. She worked in various Paris fashion houses such as Laferriere, Doucet and Diemert, and also in London. From 1912 until 1923 she was the premiere vendeuse or head saleswoman at the most important fashion house in Paris at the time, Madeleine Cheruit. A person of poise and elegance, Alice demonstrated great taste in her own dress sense.
The exhibition takes us on a chronological journey covering Alice's life and career and opens out to illustrate the history of fashion by way of some 400 items of clothing plus paintings, prints, sales documents and photographs from the family archives. Alice's personal work notebooks, recording her sales on a day by day basis, paint a compelling picture of the times she lived through. On show are dresses by Cheruit, Lanvin and Worth, shoes by Hellstern & Sons, headwear by Alphonsine, Le Monnier and Panizon, evening headbands by Rose Descat and jewellery and accessories from a very particular haute couture milieu.
